Join us five stories up atop the Hotel deLuxe's parking structure (729 SW 15th Ave) to enjoy the magic of a balmy summer night in Portland (yes, we have them) with 360 degree, moonlit views of the city at its most urban and urbane. The evenings begin at 8pm with live music and refreshments. Gracie's Restaurant will offer easy-to-juggle meals, snacks and cocktails, and additional beverages will be available from TAZO and Sierra Nevada Brewing. The screenings start at dusk-around 9pm-depending on the somewhat predictable, but ever-changing, whims of darkness. Bring your favorite portable chair or blanket, but please, no pets or outside food, or drink. Admission $7. No Student, Senior, or PAM member discounts. Stanley Kubrick

"I come up with the ideas. That is essentially the director's job." Stanley Kubrick, SIGHT AND SOUND. Whether regarded as an obsessive perfectionist or a tyrannical autocrat, it remains that Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was one of cinema's most visionary, innovative, and thought-provoking directors. Fiercely independent, Kubrick mastered both the artistic and technical aspects of filmmaking, producing 12 feature films that defy easy categorization. An auteur in every sense of the word, Kubrick wrote, directed, edited, and in many cases shot (and otherwise lived) his films simply to preserve the artistic integrity of his singular vision.

Spanish Docs

The rise of the documentary over the last decade has been an international phenomenon. A new generation of filmmakers has been able, with new digital technology and low budgets, to tackle issues, ideas and portraits as never before. In addition to compelling subjects, diversified exhibition and distribution channels are providing exciting opportunities for artists and audiences to connect. In recent years Spain has seen the emergence of a provocative documentary film movement, with first-time filmmakers taking their place beside established masters and producing works of universal interest. This sampling of recent Spanish productions includes eight award-winning films that transcend national interest, including Fernando Trueba's THE MIRACLE OF CANDEAL, a celebration of the power of music as an agent of social change; MY GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE, winner of the prestigious Joris Ivens Award at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam and Oliver Stone's fascinating COMANDANTE, a portrait of the enigmatic Fidel Castro.Thanks to Pragda, Spain Foreign Cultural Cooperation, International Documentary Association, and the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. for making these films available.
