Set among the Hmong people, an ethnic minority indigenous to the mountains of North Vietnam, this debut feature by writer–director Ngo Quang Hai is a contemplative coming–of–age story with magnificent scenery, colorful costumes and a rich sense of culture. Do Thi Hai Yen (The Quiet American) stars as Pao, a beautiful Hmong tribe girl who, following the sudden death of her stepmother, sets out to track down her birth mother. Her physical and psychic journey takes on the graceful rhythms of a timeless rural existence. This year's Vietnamese submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. ( 97 min )
