DIRECTOR: SLAWOMIR FABICKI
POLAND
In his fight to support the woman in his life and her child, 19–year–old Wojtek is forced to inhabit a world of evil that includes illegal boxing matches, small–time gangsters and debt retrieval. Those seem to be the best options in the grimness of provincial Poland, a land with plenty of heart, but a world where it's hard to see a future when all that surrounds you are coal mines and mean, poverty–ridden streets. When a co–worker at the cement factory is injured on the job, Wojtek starts to look around at his options. Handy with his fists, amateur boxing leads to a job working as a nightclub bouncer, a short drive from beating up tardy debtors. Soon the money is rolling in, but it's not a lifestyle that can keep a girl. At the heart of it, Retrieval is a psychological story that smartly charts out a decent man's attempt to do the right thing when the choices mean doing the wrong thing. This year's Polish submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. ( 103 min )
First Feature Film.
