Madeinusa (pronounced Ma–den–OO–za)—and yes, there's a reason for that name—is a 14–year–old girl, the favorite of her father, the corrupt mayor of a dismal Peruvian mountain town. Abandoned by her mother, loathed by her sister Chale and dirt poor, Madeinusa's life seems to be predictably destined until the arrival of Salvador, a geologist en route from Lima to a mining settlement nearby. Stranded in the village due to the arrival of a strange Christian/Pagan religious holiday, he strikes up a friendship with the girl and, in so doing, radically alters the trajectory of both their lives.
