DIRECTOR: JENS LIEN
NORWAY
In this darkly comic, surreal fable Lien challenges a worldview that holds acquisition, conformity and order as paramount, and sees individuality and emotion as unnecessary distractions. Forty–year–old Andreas steps off a bus into a strange city, with no memory of how he got there. It all seems familiar: people are polite, go to work, have dinner parties, go out and have sex, but no one seems to connect, create anything or even enjoy themselves. Similarly, the food tastes of nothing and the alcohol doesn't get you drunk, houses are perfectly planned, decorated and kept, but nowhere feels like home. A true fish out of water, Andreas' awkwardness as he tries to find his place in this world is painfully funny. Unsurprisingly, Andreas soon decides to try and find a way out, with his ever more desperate actions compounding the black slapstick humor of this piece. What is this place where bland good taste is held to be the highest social value? ( 95 min )
