Colorful, vibrant, and replete with romance, tragedy, history, and social commentary, this "Bollywood gone hip–hop" was a blockbuster in India and is this year's submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The title means "Bringing out the Color (of Patriotism)." The plot centers on the beautiful English granddaughter of a colonialist, who reads her grandfather's diaries and decides to make a documentary about the heroic but tragically short lives of the freedom fighters at the time of the British Raj. She recruits five Delhi college students to act the roles of their forebears, but they, as part of a contemporary consumerist, self–involved, and disenchanted generation are at first dismissive of the idealism and self–sacrificial courage of the men of the past. They would rather party than be patriots. But a critical incident brings them out of their cynical fog and they come to realize that modern corrupt leaders are as oppressive as the foreign colonialists of the past and that the past and present are connected.
