DIRECTOR: JAN HREBEJK
CZECH REPUBLIC
This clever, multi–character comic drama about "sex, money and a good person" is a meditation on the complexities of inter–personal relationships in modern Czech society. Marcela has to decide between two men: her undeserving but beloved husband, and an affable, well situated elderly foreigner. The elegant Czech–Italian expatriate represents a secure future for Marcela and her two children, and if good sense were guiding her, she wouldn't hesitate. But making the choice is not so easy in a family with complicated relationships and loyalties. Featuring sharply funny dialogue, unexpected subplots, a tour–de–force performance by seductive Ana Geislerová, the beauty of the title, and a surprising ending, Hrebejk serves up another insightful portrait of his countrymen. This year's Czech submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. ( 110 min )
Filmography: Cosy Dens (99), Divided We Fall (00), Pupendo (03), Up and Down (04).
