THE DUCHESS OF LANGEAIS
DIRECTOR: JACQUES RIVETTE
FRANCE
Antoinette (Jeanne Balibar), the Duchess of Langeais, is a married coquette who frequents the extravagant balls of 1820s Paris, where hypocrisy and vanity reign. Flattered by declarations of love from a handsome general, Armand de Montriveau (Guillaume Depardieu), the alluring Antoinette orchestrates a calculating game of flirtation and seduction, but repeatedly refuses Montriveau. When the humiliated man seeks his revenge, Antoinette's love awakens. But is it too late for the star-crossed lovers? Based on Balzac's romantic melodrama "History of the Thirteen," Rivette uses theatrical space and acting styles to explore themes that have preoccupied his distinguished, five-decade filmmaking career: the fragility of identity and the nature of cinematic representation. Print courtesy of IFC Films. ( 137 min )

Selected Filmography: L'Amour fou (68), Céline and Julie Go Boating (74), Le Pont du Nord (81), La belle Noiseuse (91), Va Savior (01), The History of Marie and Julien (03).

OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies
DIRECTOR: MICHAEL HAZANAVICIUS
FRANCE
The popular French spy film series—which follows the feats of Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, code name OSS 117—returns after a 38-year lapse with the eighth installment. Cairo, Nest of Spies spoofs the originals, the spy movie genre in general, and the legacy of French Imperialism. This time Hubert (Jean Dujardin), hot on the trail of a missing OSS agent in Egypt, gets mixed up with exotic foreign women, Nazis bent on revenge, and scores of murderous fundamentalists. Dujardin won the French Cinema Critic's "Etoiles d'Or" Best Actor prize for his portrayal of an agent more idiot savant than suave, but every bit as effective as Maxwell Smart, Inspector Clouseau and James Bond. Print courtesy of Music Box Films. ( 99 min )

Filmography: Mes Amis (99).
An additional screening has been added on Sunday February 17th at 4:45PM at Broadway 4.
Sponsored by Alliance Française de Portland and the French American Interational School.

IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA
DIRECTOR: JOSé LUIS GUERíN
SPAIN/FRANCE
"During a few languid summer days, a young foreigner spends his afternoons sketching in an outdoor café in Strasbourg. He is looking for a woman named Sylvia whom he'd met years before in the same city, but he is also sketching the many attractive young women he sees everywhere, any one of whom could be her. Then one fine afternoon, he thinks he's actually seen her, and he sets off through the city to confront his memory. José Luis Guerín's lovely, exceedingly graceful work eloquently captures the feeling of being in love with love, and the youthful sense of a world filled with an almost limitless sensuality."—New York Film Festival. In French. ( 84 min )

Selected Filmography: Berta's Motives (85), Innisfree (90), The Spectre of Le Thuit (97), En Construction (01).
Director José Luis Guerín will attend all screenings. For more information or to vote online visit Oregon Live.
