DIRECTOR: JAN SVERáK
CZECH REPUBLIC
The biggest box office success in the Czech Republic since the fall of Communism, Empties stars the director's father Zdenek Sverák, who also starred in and wrote their Oscar-winning collaboration Kolya. Past retirement age, teacher Josef Tkaloun finds he no longer understands his students and decides it is time to quit. Unaccustomed to the sudden lack of activity, he takes a succession of part-time jobs, including bicycle messenger and manager of bottle returns in a supermarket, where he finds an interesting new world. A sophisticated and perceptive comedy, Empties is full of the low-key, unpretentious and engaging observation characteristic of classic Czech cinema. Print courtesy of Films We Like. ( 103 min )
Selected Filmography: Elementary School (91), Accumulator (94), Kolya (96), Dark Blue World (01), Papa (04).
An extra encore screening of this film has been added at 12:45 PM Sunday February 24th at the Whitsell Auditorium.
