THE 10-MINUTE RULE
Seats for advance ticket and pass holders are held until 10 minutes before showtime,
when any unfilled seats are released to the public. Thus, advance tickets or passes
ensure that you will not have to wait in the ticket purchase line but do not guarantee
a seat in the case of arrival after the 10-minute window has begun. Your early arrival
also helps get screenings started promptly. We appreciate your understanding. Advance
ticket holders who arrive within the 10-minute window but are not seated may exchange
their tickets for another screening at the Ticket Outlet or obtain a cash refund at
the theater. There are no refunds or exchanges for late arrivals or for missed screenings.
DIRECTOR: PHILIPPE BARCINSKI
BRAZIL
A methodical, middle-aged traffic engineer and a calculating, 30-something snooker master, two strangers who have always found their fulfillment in trying to control the uncontrollable, find that an unpredictable world can rob them of something precious—then repay them with something else wholly unexpected. In this drama of love, loss, obsession and opportunity, Barcinski films São Paulo as a character all its own, with sweeping overhead shots that reveal a megalopolis acting as a foil for its inhabitants. ALICE'S HOUSE
DIRECTOR: CHICO TEIXEIRA
BRAZIL
In a working class São Paulo neighborhood, still waters run deep within a dangerously dysfunctional family stuffed into a cramped flat. Mother Alice is a bored beautician who drifts into an affair with an old flame, while cab-driving dad Lindomar has a weakness for under-age girls. Their three nearly-grown sons, who share a single bedroom, grapple with problems of their own. Only Alice's tight-lipped mother sees the big picture—but she's not telling. This artfully choreographed dance of daily life maintains a warm, engaging reality, anchored by the earthy and sympathetic presence of Carla Ribas, who gives a glowing performance as Alice. Winner of the Special Jury Prize, Guadalajara Film Festival. Adult. Print courtesy of FiGa Films. ( 90 min )
Filmography: Favelas (89), Carrego Comigo (00).

THE YEAR MY PARENTS WENT ON VACATION
DIRECTOR: CAO HAMBURGER
BRAZIL
Eleven-year-old Mauro finds himself suddenly being raised by strangers after his Jewish father and Catholic mother are forced to go into hiding during a brutal crackdown in 1970 by the Brazilian military government. Hastily deposited on his paternal grandfather's São Paulo doorstep while his parents are "on vacation," Mauro is thrust into a vibrant ethnic neighborhood filled with Yiddish speakers, Italian immigrants and Greek merchants. Mauro at first does not realize the nature of his parents' absence, and with all the excitement of his new world and Brazil's run in the World Cup, it takes a while before he discovers that there is more to life than fun and games. This year's Brazilian submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Print courtesy of City Lights Media. ( 104 min )
Filmography: Frankenstein Punk (86), Castle Ra-Tim-Bum (99).
