DIRECTOR: REHA ERDEM
TURKEY
Both rhythmically and visually seductive, this lyrical portrayal of life in the small village of Kozlu on Turkey's northwest coast focuses on three friends who are transitioning from childhood to adolescence. Ömer longs for the death of his father, the local Imam; Yakup is smitten with their dreamy schoolteacher; and Yildiz is subsumed by household chores while her mother cares for an infant sibling. In the windswept village, time is measured by the Islamic call to prayer five times a day, though any sense of order is ruffled by nature, the elements and the deep emotions of the young protagonists. The giddy desire to escape family constraints leads from small rebellions to self-discovery, in a stunning film that "packs a poetic-spiritual punch way beyond its placid surface."—Variety.
