DIRECTOR: HOU HSIAO-HSIEN
TAIWAN
Juliette Binoche stars in Hou Hsiao-Hsien's first French-language feature, inspired by Albert Lamorisse's 1956 classic The Red Balloon. A mysterious red balloon affectionately floats alongside Suzanne, an emotionally unsteady, workaholic puppeteer, and her somewhat neglected seven-year-old son, Simon, as their story unfolds. Com-pletely absorbed by her new show, Suzanne becomes overwhelmed by the complications of modern life and decides to hire a Taiwanese film student to handle the care of her son. Emphasizing the lyrical imagery of the color red—a symbol of good luck in Chinese culture—and contrasting the de-saturated, cold black-and-white tones of Parisian streets with the warm colors and messiness of Suzanne's home, Hou develops the interplay between Suzanne's chaotic inner life, the beautiful but impersonal rhythms of a contemporary European metropolis, and life as a cultural outsider.
