There’s nothing like the look of film. Even in this age of digital imaging, the 16mm format is still a viable option for the independent filmmaker who embraces the tradition and aesthetic quality of celluloid. The first half of the course covers the basics of 16mm camera operation and shooting
techniques, using the Bolex, Arri-S, Éclair, and Arri-SR cameras. Handling of the 16mm cameras will be extensive as students learn about and practice loading and unloading film, cleaning cameras, the different characteristics of film stocks and lenses, conducting film tests, keeping camera logs, and communicating with a film laboratory. Each student will do a short, independent, non-sync (single system) project, shooting 200 feet of 16mm which will be edited using Final Cut Pro 7 and Cinema Tools for video finish. The second half of the course goes more deeply into 16mm workflow, covering the logistics of shooting and editing in sync (double system) through a group project for sound mix and video finish. To facilitate turnaround and keep expenses down, the sync group project will be shot on HD using a DSLR camera with full-frame 35mm optical sensors and interchangeable lenses. Students will discuss how 16mm double system is edited and the workflow for finishing on film versus digital video. Extensive shooting and editing time outside class is required. 200 feet of film, processing, and transfer are included in the Equipment/Lab Fee.
