
This course introduces the principles of film editing, emphasizing the importance of emotion and story in creating narrative clarity and how meaning is created through juxtaposition of images and sound. The class begins with an overview of the history of editing, then explores film grammar (including scenes, shots, matching action, parallel action, the 180-degree rule, 30-degree rule, the five basic kinds of edits, and why you cut and when). Using the basics of the Final Cut Pro 7 application, students will edit projects in increasing complexity, exploring the difference between montage and continuity approaches and learning how it’s just as important to know when not to cut as it is to cut. Working with multiple tracks of audio, preparing a project for final output (checking levels, how to export at high resolution, etc.), and other technical considerations will also be covered. Hands-on demonstrations and critiques occur throughout the term. Editing time outside of class is required and can be reserved to fit a variety of schedules.
