Current Offerings

Go deeply into a certain technique or the operations of a particular type of equipment or software through one of these short workshops. These are for individuals preparing to use Film Center equipment on a subsidized rental basis, for film students who want a refresher outside of full semester School of Film courses, for those who are considering the purchase of their own equipment, or for the beginner who wants to take some exploratory first steps. No pre-requisites except as noted.



WINTER 2010

FINAL CUT PRO OVERVIEW Course #773
SECTION 1: SUNDAY, NOV 15, NOON-5 PM
SECTION 2: SUNDAY, FEB 21, NOON-5 PM

Using Apple’s revolutionary editing software, Final Cut Pro, participants will learn the basics of nonlinear editing, including logging, digitizing, editing shots together, adding transitions (dissolves, wipes), and outputting to digital videotape. Session includes a brief break. Pre-requisites: Working knowledge of video editing and Macintosh operating system.

FINAL CUT PRO ADVANCED TECHNIQUES Course #982
MONDAYS, JAN 25-FEB 22, 6:30-9:30 PM

Get under the hood of the software's capacity to improve workflow, deliver a more professional product and increase your proficiency. Topics are: working with prosumer HD tapeless workflows; advanced user preference settings; customizing Final Cut Pro's keyboard and screen layouts; introduction to filters, motion effects, and keyframing techniques; Final Cut Pro's color correction tools; media management; prepping your edit for online editing or for collaboration with sound mixers/composer; film finishing and introduction to the digital intermediate workflow. Participants may work from their own footage or use online stock footage. Pre-requisites: DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING or general proficiency in Final Cut Pro.

MANAGE YOUR MEDIA Course #765
SATURDAY, JAN 30, 9 AM-1 PM

You can’t create and/or update a portfolio reel, apply for grants, show your work, or keep a general record of your DV accomplishments if you don’t know how to collect, migrate, and otherwise manage your media. Learn how to select, format, organize, and back up an external drive. Store files so they can be accessed later for re-editing, or outputted to formats such as tape and disc. Save your work for different applications (e.g. Web, DVD). These skills will make it possible to rebuild a project in the event of a system crash or other catastrophe.

BOLEX/ARRI FILM CAMERA OPERATION Course #761
SUNDAY, FEB 7, 1-4 PM

Ready to try some nonsync shooting but don’t know where to start? Or need a refresher in basic 16mm camera operation? Learn to use the Film Center’s Bolex and Arri cameras, veteran workhorses for silent nonsync shooting. Emphasis will be on loading, exposure, light meter techniques, accessories, cleaning, and troubleshooting. Handling of the cameras will be extensive.

SOUND RECORDING Course #764
SATURDAY, FEB 13, 10 AM-2 PM

Learn basic sound recording techniques by becoming familiar with the Film Center’s sound recording gear, including the Marantz PMD-660, as well as the Sound Devices 702 Digital Audio Recorder, Mix-Pre, and 302 field mixers. Students will also receive a general overview of microphone types and uses, from lavaliers to shotguns.

PANASONIC DVX-100 CAMERA OPERATION Course #760
SATURDAY, FEB 20, 10 AM-1 PM

This camera is the indie standard in digital video shooting. Learn the basics of shooting at a 24p frame rate (which aligns with film). Workshop also covers inputs, settings, troubleshooting, aspect ratios (4x3, 16x9, squeeze function), proper use of external microphones, adapters and batteries, and white balancing. Handling of the cameras will be extensive.

DVD STUDIO PRO Course #781
SUNDAY, FEB 28, 1-5 PM

Make your demo reel into a memorable calling card by creating a DVD that shows off your work to best advantage. Using Apple's authoring software, DVD Studio Pro, participants will learn the basics of DVD authoring, including: file preparation, custom navigation, menus, chapters, slideshows, alternate audio tracks, and preparation of projects for both home DVD burning and professional duplication. Pre-created video and graphics to be provided. Pre-requisites: Knowledge of the Macintosh operating system and Photoshop highly recommended.
