XXY
ARGENTINA
Director: Lucía Puenzo

Wed Feb 13 6:15PM B3
Fri Feb 15 6:15PM B3
Sun Feb 17 7:45PM B1
Mon Feb 18 7PM B1

Winner of the Critics Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, XXY is a teen drama with a twist. Because of 15-year-old Alex's indeterminate gender, her parents decide to exile the family to a small island community. As she comes of age, her parents feel it is time for them to decide if she is to be a woman or a man. Her mother invites some old friends to visit for the weekend—one of whom just happens to be a surgeon. They also bring their teenage son, who knows nothing of Alex's story but is intrigued by this tomboy. Ricardo Darin (Nine Queens, Kamchatka) delivers a brilliant performance as the father, who—one way or another—is losing his wonderful little girl forever. This year's Argentine submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Print courtesy of Film Movement. (90 min)

First Feature Film.

An additional screening has been added on Monday February 18th at 7:00PM at Broadway 1.

La ANTENA
ARGENTINA
Director: Esteban Saphir

Thu Feb 14 9:15PM B2
Fri Feb 15 6:45PM B2
Sat Feb 16 6:15PM B2

A dazzling homage to comic book science fiction and silent film, La Antena owes much to cinematic masters such as Fritz Lang, Luis Buñuel and Tim Burton, but has a fresh imagination all its own. In a surreal, fairytale world where a diabolical media magnate, Mr. TV, has stolen the citizens' voices, a fractured family must come together to stop him from stealing their words as well. Mixing live action and animation with both whimsy and sophisticated allegory, Saphir's magical tale offers an intelligent meditation on the power of the media to hypnotize and oppress the masses, a warning all too pertinent to the history of Argentina. Print courtesy of mdc International. (90 min)

Filmography: Fine Powder (96).
