Honored at the Cannes Film Festival this year with the Chalais Prize as a film that "best reflects the reality of our world," and the Best Actor (ensemble) award, Days of Glory (Indigènes) is an emotionally compelling and visually striking war story. In World War II, 150,000 "indigenous" men from the former colonies of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, called "indigenous," served as French infantrymen, fighting the Nazis to protect a country most had never visited and countrymen whose notions of liberté, egalité and fraternité did not extend to their North African brothers. The story focuses on five soldiers whose battalion fights its way through Europe winning battles as they come to terms with individual tests of allegiance. Bouchareb's powerful film provoked widespread debate in France about race, ethnicity and class, finally helping rally support for raising the pensions of 80,000 soldiers and widows and securing full and equal benefits for the courageous soldiers serving France, regardless of birthplace.
