KONTROLL - Nimrod Antal
Set in the underworld of the Budapest
subway system Antal's dark, action-packed thriller has
been a critical and commercial hit in Hungary and throughout
Europe. Already a bit of a cult sensation, the blackly
humorous and visually stylish events follow a band of
scorned, rag-tag subway ticket-control officers who
patrol a subterranean world populated by every sort
of troublesome individual. Into their hallucinatory
mix comes a rash of suicides, or perhaps the work of
a serial killer that seems to mysteriously be able to
push passengers into the path of oncoming trains. As
Bulcsú, the leader of the team pushes the investigation
he becomes the prime murder suspect, sinking deeper
and deeper into a paranoid urban nightmare as dark and
labyrinthine as the underground tunnels themselves.
This year’s Hungarian submission for the Best
Foreign Film Oscar and the winner of numerous Hungarian
and international film prizes, Kontroll creates a comic,
surreal and menacing reality. (1:46:00) Print
