CRÓNICAS- Sebastián Cordero
In a small town in Ecuador, terror grips
the streets as a serial child killer “The Monster
of Babahoyo” claims yet another victim. Covering
the story for his Miami television station is the ambitious
Manolo (John Leguizamo) and his crew, always on the
lookout for something sensational to get on the air.
Tragedy strikes again when a poor Bible salesman, Vinicio,
accidentally hits and kills a young boy with his truck
and is almost killed by an angry mob. Seeing a new story,
Manolo visits Vinicio in jail, where he is awaiting
trial, likely to become a lightning rod for mounting
community frustration. But Vinicio turns the tables
when he claims to have secret information about the
serial killer—which he will share with Manolo
in exchange for a sympathetic TV story about the accident.
Hungry for a hot lead, Manolo begins to secretly investigate
Vinicio's clues. It isn't long before body and soul
are at risk in a pact with the devil. Cordero’s
dark thriller brings to the surface issues of both personal
and professional responsibility and in a larger sense,
the exploitation of the weak by the powerful. Ecuador’s
submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Print
