CZECH DREAM-
Vít Klusák, Filip Remunda
Capitalism, globalism and advertising
are the targets in this witty and provocative documentation
of a large-scale consumer hoax perpetrated by two mischievous
film students in Prague. Impressed/dismayed by the rapid
growth of big-box “hypermarkets” in their
country, Klusák and Remunda organize an advertising
and promotional campaign for the grand opening of a
nonexistent one. They hire a top ad agency to develop
their advertising and marketing campaign—including
TV and radio spots, billboards, jingle, website, flyers
and newspaper ads—and await the grand opening.
Sure enough, on the appointed day an unsuspecting public
rabid for deals storm the ribbon cutting—held
in front of a fake façade erected in a field.
The resulting scandal, alternately hilarious and discomforting,
illuminates the power and effect of rampant consumerism
in a country still adjusting to a market economy while
adding to the ongoing debate over the globalization
of goods and loss of cultural identity. (1:27:00) Print
