SAINT RALPH
-
Michael McGowan

14-year old Ralph, who has already lost his father, must now confront the death of his mother who is in the hospital and has lapsed into a coma. Only a miracle will save her. Being a good Catholic boy, the possibility of a miracle is not outside the realm of reason. Perhaps he can make one happen. Divine intervention comes when he is sentenced by his stern headmaster to join the cross-country team in punishment for his escapades in school. But rather than hating it, Ralph takes to running and the wise coach (Campbell Scott), recognizing his talent, invests in training him. In short order Ralph concludes that if he can perform an impossible running feat it might be the miracle needed to save his mother. Maybe he could win the Boston Marathon? Set in 1950s Hamilton, Ontario, Saint Ralph is a charming, bittersweet story of faith, love and determination told through the plucky exploits of an unlikely hero. (1:38:00) Print courtesy of IDP.
