MERCANO - Juan Antin
The first independent Argentine animated film
in 30 years, Mercano’s wit has captivated audiences
around the world. The story follows Mercano, an adorable alien
who lives happily on Mars until the tragic day when his dog
is killed by a sonar wave sent from Earth. Seeking revenge,
he sets course for Earth, crash-landing in Argentina—not
an ideal place for a stranger without money or a job. Stranded
in Buenos Aires, the lonely Martian wanders through a city
that has been devastated by poverty, violence and uncertainty.
Antín uses humor and irony to illuminate the realities
of his native country through the eyes of an outsider. “A
slyly political, frequently antic take on the classic paranoid
scenario of a Martian Invasion on Earth. . . ”—Variety.

BOMBÓN—EL
PERRO -
Carlos Sorin
Sorin’s comic, Patagonian road-movie
celebrates the buoyant optimism that can still be found
in the humblest of lives and opportunities. Juan (down
on his luck and unemployed after the gas station he
works at goes under) hustles to survive. One day luck
unexpectedly turns his way when a woman gives him her
dog in exchange for towing her daughter’s car.
It turns out the beautiful Le Chien—who used to
belong to a Frenchman—is a pure bred Argentine
Dogo who might win some prize money at a dog show. Juan
and Leichen set off in search of fortune, soon running
into Walter, a Dogo expert, who wants to breed him.
But Le Chien, who seems to know his human companions
better than they know him, has other ideas. (1:37:00)

ROMA
- Adolfo Aristarain
When journalist Manuel Cueto is hired
to type novelist Joaquín Góñez’s
new book, his presence provokes an avalanche of feelings
in a writer who has shut himself away from the world
and his own memories. Their meeting surfaces long-forgotten
chapters of Joaquin’s youth in Buenos Aires in
the ’50s and ’60s—particularly the
force of his relationship with his mother Roma, an intelligent,
strong and understanding woman who supported his youthful
ideals and gave him his once formidable Bohemian spirit.
The unforgettable memory of Roma awakens in Joaquín
the desire and impatience to recover everything he thought
he had lost. (2:35:00) Print courtesy of Soqepaq.
