Those who were swept away by last year’s
Festival audience favorite Devdas will enjoy this widescreen
Bollywood block-buster. Raj Malhotra and his wife Pooja have
devotedly raised a family of four sons who are now nicely
settled in their respective profession and families. Their
seemingly perfect life has been filled with love and prosperity,
in part, because Raj has spent his entire savings to give
his children every opportunity. Calling everyone together
to announce his retirement, everything suddenly changes. None
of the sons are interested in supporting their parents. In
fact they are all shocked to learn they won’t be inheriting
even more and reluctantly let their parents live with them—only
if they agree to split up and rotate from son to son every
six months. Realizing that “family” is a conditional
term, Raj and Pooja depend on the kindness of strangers to
overcome the new turmoil in their lives. In the end, there
are surprises (and musical extrava-ganzas) for all. (181 mins.)
