| NOI ALBINOI |
Dagur Kári |
A prizewinner at numerous international film
festivals, Kári’s distinctive debut combines
deadpan Nordic humor and romantic lyricism as it follows a
teen nonconformist whose dreams are frostbitten by dead-end,
small-fjord life in Northern Iceland. Seventeen-year-old Noi
skips classes, rebels against authority, and fantasizes about
escape. Misunderstood at school (the school shrink does think
he’s a genius) and by his family—a loving but
aging grandmother, alcoholic father, and absent mother—Noi’s
lively spirit is stifled. Hope appears with the arrival of
Iris, a beautiful city girl. Inspired, he hatches a madcap
scheme to flee to Hawaii. But Noi’s path to escape will
not be an easy or predictable one. Striking cinematography,
bittersweet storytelling, and a universal, coming-of-age theme
combine in a quirky Jim Jarmusch/Aki Kaurismäki-flavored
story of arctic angst. (93 mins.) Print courtesy of Palm Pictures.
