Bolivia’s submission for the Best Foreign
Film Oscar, Sexual Dependency is made up of five interrelated
vignettes and five confused teenagers—three in Bolivia,
two in the U.S.—desperately trying to make sense of
their sexuality. Shot on digital video, with a verité,
The Real World feel, Bellott explores virginity, social pressure,
self-loathing, homophobia, rape, and the expectations of a
sex-obsessed media which each day marginalizes and damages
teens in either hemisphere. Utilizing split-screen techniques
to convey its characters’ isolation and an invisible,
ever-present web of sexual tension, Bellott portrays a social,
emotional and sexual quagmire with a brutal honesty that recalls
Larry Clark’s Kids. This frank, unsettling portrait
of today’s youth won the International Critics’
Prize at the Locarno Film Festival. (105 mins.) Adult content.
