Welcome to the Northwest Film Center’s 22nd annual showcase of new world cinema. Like our annual Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, and the many
other year-round Film Center programs, the Festival seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore, discover, understand and celebrate the diversity of not only the art of film, but the world around you.

It is said that film speaks every language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in singular fashion. This year’s films reflect, we hope, what unites people rather than what divides them. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of filmmakers, public and private arts funders, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This intricate partnership makes the event possible and we wish the credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreciation of all who support this event. This year we are especially pleased to welcome Regal Cinemas as a presenting sponsor. Their enthusiasm follows in the long traditions of Act III and Luxury Theatres, who have provided homes for Festival.

Finally, all of us at the Northwest Film Center thank you, our audience, for your continued enthusiasm and adventurous spirit in peering through this special window on the world of cinema. As the last PIFF of the century, we hope that more than a few of the 88 films in this year’s Festival—each a note of vision—key your inspiration. So, put Portland on hold for a while and take a trip someplace you’ve never been.
