STILL LIFE AND OTHER JOURNEYS FROM THE STUDIO - 7pm
Jacob Pander / Portland, OR
For the last four years Portland filmmaker and comic book artist, Jacob Pander, has been quietly fashioning an intimate portrait of his father, the illustrious Northwest painter, Henk Pander.
We get to see Pander in the act of creating as, before our eyes, he conceives and completes an ambitious still life–all the while revealing his story, his technique and the sources of his inspiration. The filmmaker follows his father from the solitude of his studio, to the desert highways where he finds inspiration, all the way to his homeland in Holland where his father, a commercial artist who died many years ago, becomes a key player in the legend. LOS ZAFIROS - 9pm
LORENZO DESTEFANO / VANCOUVER, BC In the early ‘60s a group of musicians from Havana came together as Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) with a singing style that took Cuba and much of non-US western world by storm. Trapped in a parallel universe of pop, they were stars in Europe and the USSR, but not in Castro-wary America, ironically the inspiration to their winning musical formula. A combination of doo-wop, r&b, Calypso, rumba, bossa nova and other Latin American dance music, Los Zafiros developed a sound and style much like The Platters and other vocal quintets of the ‘50s and ‘60's. DeStefano reunites the surviving members of the group for a warm, memory, music and image filled celebration of the still—legendary status they have in their home neighborhood of Cayo Hueso .
