26th Northwest Film & Video Festival

WELCOME

For twenty-six years now, we have asked of ourselves and those keen souls who lend themselves as our Festival Judges, "What is the Northwest sensibility?" Flannel shirts and rain have entered the conversation and perhaps the certainty that we are not Los Angeles or New York has been at times identity enough. This we know for sure: the thousands of media artists who create work in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and British Columbia-300 of which submitted new work this year-continue to amaze us with their talent and maverick creativity. Their work is the blood that ensures the Northwest Film & Video Festival's vitality.

Sitting with this year's judge Matt Groening on a non-typical sunny weekend in September, we were reminded of these stubborn Northwest roots. Matt remembers the Portland of his youth vividly. He remembers his brother taking him to the movies at the Blue Mouse with the remnants of haircut money. He is the type of man who knows on which screen he first saw his favorite film. It is evident that he has always loved film. It is also evident that Los Angeles and fame have not stripped the unassuming sensibility from this local boy. Matt's attention was rapt, his choices astute. And for that, we thank him.

We owe much gratitude as well to our many sponsors and contributors, whose on-going support has enabled this Festival to flourish.

The Northwest Film & Video Festival begins with a celebration of our regional vibrancy.

We hope, in this week of screenings, panels, roundtables to spark a dialogue between artist, presenter and audience alike; and beyond these meetings to enhance national recognition for the well-crafted, daring and fiercely independent work that falls within our boundaries.

We hope to find you in the dark often this week, to be consumed, moved and truly, madly entertained by the bevy of extraordinary shorts, features and documentaries that fall upon the screen.
