COMMUNITY FILMMAKING
Last year Seattle filmmaker Gregg Lachow and other professionnals

called simply The Film Company, with the goal to develop a
replicable model for contemporary independent filmmaking,
facilitated by a core company of artists and drawing on the
talents of the larger Seattle arts community. The Film Company
has already succeeded in producing their first feature film,
TELEPHONE POLE NUMBERING SYSTEM. Today key members of the
group discuss their progress and desire to see similar organizations
develop across the country. Scheduled to attend: Gregg Lachow:
Executive Director, The Film Company; Danielle Morgan, Distribution
Director, The Film Company; William Weiss, Director, TELEPHONE

MEET THE JUDGE: MICHAEL
ALMEREYDA
Michael Almereyda began as a screenwriter for directors such
as David Lynch, Tim Burton and Wim Wenders, and has since
earned a reputation as a fearless, genre blending filmmaker.
His first feature film TWISTER was nominated for an Independent
Spirit Award in 1990. He was an innovator, along with Sadie
Benning, in the use of low-resolution toy video cameras and
continues to use them in his short and feature work. He is
best known for modern interpretations of classic stories such
as his updates on the Dracula legend NADJA (1994), Shakespeare’s
HAMLET (2000), both of which he set in contemporary New York
City, HAPPY HERE AND NOW (2002), set in New Orleans and his
new documentary, WILLIAM EGGLESTON IN THE REAL WORLD, a portratit
of Memphis photographer. Almereyda has drawn on his diverse
filmmaking background, including comedic, experimental, dramatic
and documentary work to select his favorite films from this
year’s Northwest Film & Video Festival. This afternoon
we will screen excerpts of some of the films that caught his
eye- with lively discussion between the filmmakers and Judge
