This hands-on foundation course, the School of Film’s celebrated beginning-level experience for more than two decades, is a comprehensive introduction to film production and basic film analysis. Using digital cameras (both SD and HD) and editing equipment (provided through Equipment/Lab Fee), the course explores the key components of film language, such as storytelling, composition, light, movement, and rhythm, as students achieve a working knowledge of the film production process by producing original short films individually and in small groups. Basic camera operation, sound recording, and shooting technique will be examined, as will basic principles of editing using Final Cut Pro 7 software. Students are encouraged to develop their own artistic vision of the subjects they wish to pursue. In-class screenings, discussions, and critiques will support each stage of production activity. Students should expect to spend outside time on their film productions. Videotape, memory card, and a portable hard drive are each student's responsibility.
